Last year we once again broke the previous year's fuindraising record and set ourselves
the daunting task of hitting €10,000 on Thomas' 10 year aniversary. So did we
make it? Read on and find out.
This time out the Thomas Sherlock Memorial Shield took place in Cootehill on the October bank-holiday
weekend, but in truth events started the previous weekend with a quiz held in Anthonys Inn.
A week later and 15 dedicated souls made the lengthy trip to Cavan, arriving on Saturday and
straight into the thick of it with an auction in Bannons Bar that night.
As usual the auction was highly successful and the great atmosphere (and some alcohol) helped loosen
wallets. Following the auction there was a slightly less successful Karaoke (due to talent not
organisation), with plans now to scrap the auction next year and just adopt the "pay to stop the karaoke-pain"
approach.

The game took itself place on Sunday afternoon at Claragh Lane and, despite raging hangovers, was it's usual light-hearted and
sporting affair. It took much the same course as last years game with Piltown taking an early lead and
cootehill cheating clawing their way back into it. At one stage the Cootehill looked more like a gaelic football team
sporting the full 15 players. In typical TSMS style they scored at the death to level the game 3-3 and (surprise surprise) once again
bring the game to a penalty shoot-out. Again like last year only one penalty was missed, but this time
unfortunatley it was on the Piltown side and so the shield returns to Cootehill under dubious circumstances yet again.
Following the game we moved on to the WestEnd bar where food had been prepared. We were once again treated to the
excellently organised and hugely supported 'Stars in their Eyes' competition followed by the main ticket draw.
As I said earlier we hoped, being the 10th anniversary of Thomas' death and the 10th annual charity match,
that we would reach the €10,000 mark (hoped being the operative word). Well not only did we reach it but we surpassed even our own
expectations, raising a whopping €11,000. That's up €3,000 on last year and brings the total raised to over €35,000.
So all in all it was a brilliant weekend and a brilliant result for the charity. It's nice to be able to raise money for
worthy causes in such a light-hearted and enjoyable manner.
As usual a very big thank you goes to those that supported, it is really very much appreciated by the families and clubs involved.
A special thanks also goes to Paul Walsh and Paul Brady who both completed the Dublin City marathon in aid of the cause
and helped raise over €800.
